United States – Treehouse Foods Inc., a major manufacturer of frozen food products, announced that it was recalling dozens of its cooked waffle products on account of a suspected listeria problem.
These products were sold across the United States and Canada and come in several pack sizes, as per the recall notice published by the company that features photographs of different waffle products, as reported by HealthDay.
Waffles Affected by the Recall
They are Kodiak Cakes waffles and waffles under Publix, Food Lion, Walmart, and Target brands, the Illinois-based food processing company said. So far, there have been no reports of any illnesses associated with the consumption of the implicated food.
Consumers should look for the recalled products in their freezers and discard the foods or return the product to the store for credit.
The listeriosis bacteria are easy to broadcast in food processing plants, which can be nearly impossible to eliminate, states the U.S. Center for Disease Control.
Contamination Concerns
Listeria bacteria is the main cause responsible for listeriosis, the third most common cause of death by food borne diseases in the United States. Some signs can be in form of fever, muscle aches and fatigue. An infection can also result to a stiff neck, a headache, confusion and may lead to seizures. It is most dangerous for older people, pregnant women and everyone with a lowered immune system.
Currently, approximately 1,600 people are affected by listeria, and 260 people succumb to the infection every year, according to the U.S. CDC.
This waffle recall is part of a string of listeria, which are as follows; in late July, 7.2 million lbs of Boar’s Head deli meats were recalled and led to the shutdown of the Virginia plant, as reported by HealthDay.
Recently, the ready-to-eat producer of processed meat and poultry, BrucePac, recalled more than 11.7 million pounds of product for potential listeria contamination.
